
In 1880, Lipót Gallwitz founded Pest’s first woodturning workshop in Korona herceg Street (today Petőfi Sándor Street). At that time, he still made pipes and works of art on a foot-powered wooden lathe.
Later, his sons established the Gallwitz Brothers company at 9 Párisi Street. Their branch shop operated at 4 Kígyó Street, while their workshop was located in Városház Street.
In addition to manufacturing pipes and decorative goods, the company was engaged in restoration, porcelain repair, carving ivory figurines, making and repairing fans, repairing lighters, and distributing products from some of the world’s most renowned manufacturers, including Dunhill, Savinelli, and Peterson.
Everyone could find products suited to their taste and needs in the shop. Among its visitors were counts, princes, and well-known actors such as Kálmán Rózsahegyi, Árpád Ódri, Antal Páger, and Pál Jávor, and on one occasion even Miklós Horthy himself visited the store.
